DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHS & 3D IMAGING
WholeHealth Family Dentistry is proud to provide low dose 2D and 3D digital x-rays. Digital x-rays can reduce patient exposure 80% - 90% compared to film based radiography. This technology is safer and more efficient for both the dental staff and patients. 3D imaging provides us an effective and clear diagnostic tool, thus bringing much more value and definitive information to a comprehensive dental exam. We feel 3D imaging has become the standard of care in dentistry to evaluate dental infections deep within the teeth and the surrounding bone, for example the evaluation of root canal treated teeth. This allows us to deliver the highest quality, comprehensive care for our patients.
THE DENTAL CYCLE
An Effective Alternative To Crowns
Biomimetic Dentistry is the best type of dentistry available to restore decayed, damaged, or broken teeth. We can confidently restore teeth without the excessive grinding and trauma created from a dental crown! This maintains the natural strength of teeth, avoids root canals, minimizes discomfort and is ultimately less expensive. Stress reduced direct composites have made dental crowns obsolete and unnecessary in nearly all situations. Biomimetic Dentistry eliminates the need for dental crowns and reduces the need for root canals by 90%
TRADITIONAL vs BIOMIMETIC
TRADITIONAL
Traditional dentistry encourages good dental hygiene habits and regular visits to your dentist in order to maintain the natural tooth. However, when problems arise little effort is made to save the natural tooth structure.
BIOMIMETIC
The very meaning of Biomimetic Dentistry is to “mimic nature”. The natural tooth is the strongest, best functioning and healthiest possible therefore we aim to maintain the integrity of the natural state. If problems occur, Biomimetic Dentistry will restore and not destroy the natural tooth.
TRADITIONAL
When a cavity is present a drill is used to remove the decayed portion of the tooth and also the healthy tooth structure surrounding the affected area in order to hold the filling in place. There are many types of materials used in fillings including metals, plastics, and resin. Most products used create a solid rigid mass inside the tooth that doesn’t allow for any give and can lead to cracking and further breakdown.
BIOMIMETIC
An air abrasion tool is used to gently remove only the decayed portion of the tooth. Air abrasion is a replacement for the drill that is more comfortable and often requires little or no anesthetic. The goal is to remove the least amount of tooth structure as possible. Advanced materials and techniques are used to fill the cavity and create the strongest bond possible to not only mimic the function of the natural tooth but also prevent more problems with the tooth.
TRADITIONAL
A larger filling is performed much like a normal filling. However, more drilling is necessary and a more extensive crater is left in the tooth to fill. This greatly hinders the tooth’s strength and overall integrity. This step usually leads to needing future dental work and repairs in the future.
BIOMIMETIC
Like a smaller filling an air abrasion tool is used to remove only the deteriorating portion of the tooth. Great care is taken to fill the cavity with a strong but flexible bond so that tooth can still function naturally which decreases the chances of further destruction with cracks and breaks requiring repairs.
TRADITIONAL
A crown is a cap that completely covers what is left of a tooth that has been badly damaged, decayed beyond repair, or cracked and broken after previous dental work. Crowns can also be used to complete other dental hardware being placed in the mouth. Crowns are made of materials that are completely solid and firm. When preparing for a crown the tooth is cut down and filed. Much of the tooth structure is lost. Crowns are known for being on the more expensive side of the dental work spectrum.
BIOMIMETIC
If a patient has been treated using Biomimetic Dentistry in the past a crown is often not needed. When a new patient is seen and the tooth is already beyond what a typical Biomimetic filling can repair inlays and onlays are used. These are treatments that use a layering technique to actually build up and restore the integrity of the tooth. This Biomimetic approach provides a stronger more natural tooth which usually hinders further damage requiring more extensive work. Biomimetic Dentistry is very cost effective not only in its actual procedures but also with its prevention of more repairs.
TRADITIONAL
Root canal therapy is the procedure most patients associate with pain. A root canal is necessary when the pulp of the tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected. A hole is drilled into the tooth and the pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned out. It is then filled with a special compound and the hole is sealed. Often a crown is then needed due to extreme weakening of the tooth from the extensive damage or decay and the root canal procedure itself.
BIOMIMETIC
When being treated with Biomimetic Dentistry the tooth rarely requires a root canal. By using the most resilient materials and reliable sealants infection is prevented and therefore never reaches the center of the tooth. Biomimetic dentistry has an excellent success rate for stopping the cycle of tooth breakdown that leads to root canals. If a new patient presents already in need of a root canal advanced methods are used, including laser irrigation and ozone therapy, to completely rid the tooth of all infection and bacteria and prevent a re-infection. The tooth is then restored using Biomimetic materials and procedures. No crown is needed.
TRADITIONAL
A tooth is extracted when all hope for restoring or repairing is lost. It is a last resort and often comes after many repairs before it. Each preceding traditional procedure for repairing teeth compromises the stability of the tooth and regularly leads to the next, more extensive step in the repair cycle for the life of the tooth.
BIOMIMETIC
The goal of Biomimetic Dentistry is to imitate the science of the natural tooth. When the proper steps are taken and premium materials are used it enables the tooth to remain as close to its natural state as possible which leads to less breakdown that requires repair. A tooth that has always been treated with Biomimetic methods will not need extraction.
TRADITIONAL
A bridge is sometimes used after a tooth has been extracted. It is made of at least two crowns for the surrounding remaining teeth and an artificial tooth to fill the empty space where a tooth was extracted. It is permanently cemented into place. More often an implant is used to replace an extracted tooth. An implant is composed of a metal post, similar to a screw, that is surgically placed into the jaw bone and topped with a porcelain tooth
BIOMIMETIC
Through the ideals of teeth conserving dentistry through Biomimetic principles a tooth is prevented from reaching the point of extraction. Therefore, a bridge or implant does not come into play.
TRADITIONAL
When the majority of a patient’s teeth are badly damaged to the point of needing extraction the dentist may opt for a full mouth extraction and then fit the patient with dentures. The healing process after a full extraction may take several months. Dentures are made of flesh colored acrylic that fits over the gums and roof of the mouth and porcelain teeth. Oftentimes many follow up appointments are necessary to get the fit and comfort of dentures correct.
BIOMIMETIC
The purpose of Biomimetic Dentistry is to uphold the natural tooth. The goal is to completely stop the breakdown of teeth through invasive and destructive repairs and ensure that a patient never need a full extraction for dentures.
