Juicing: Substitute or Supplement

Each year, more and more Americans move towards a more health conscious lifestyle. New Year's resolutions are just around the corner, and studies show that around half of all resolutions made are health related. One way that people implement these healthier choices into their lifestyles is through juicing. Juicing involves using a special machine to extract the liquids from fruit and vegetables in order to condense many servings into one drink. Some use it as a cleanse that’s a temporary replacement for whole foods, and others use it as a supplement to their existing diet.

Oil Pulling 101

Nothing can replace the importance of brushing and flossing to maintain a healthy mouth. However, people all over the world are sharing their stories about how oil pulling has helped their mouths become healthier than ever.

What is it?

A teaspoon of oil (coconut and sunflower are the most popular) is swished around the mouth, usually for around 15 to 20 minutes. Then, the oil is spit out, and water is used to rinse out the mouth.

Do You Have Amalgam in Your Mouth?

Dental fillings come in many different materials. Amalgam is one of those options. It’s unique in that it’s made of around 50% mercury. The name may not sound familiar, but you or someone you know most likely has these fillings as they were once of the most popular options and remain one of the cheapest. Often called "silver" fillings, this nickname is misleading as it attempts to suggest they’re made mostly out of silver, which just isn’t true.

In the United States, dental offices are one of the biggest users of mercury. The FDA admits that high levels of mercury can have detrimental effects on the brain and the kidneys and doesn’t recommend these fillings for pregnant women or children under six due to the lack of available research. Dentists and hygienists who use amalgam fillings in their office must take special precautions when handling and disposing of the material. In addition to taking precautions against touching or inhaling the liquid mixture while preparing it, special drains in the sinks must be placed to avoid the substance from entering the water system. This alone leads to obvious concerns about putting something directly in the mouth that professionals go to such great lengths to avoid interacting with.

Drills and Dentists

Modern dental equipment is invented with patient care in mind and designed to cause the least amount of discomfort possible. That doesn’t mean that technological advances have completely solved dental related anxiety and fears. The Academy of General Dentistry has found that the high-pitched, buzzing sound made by a dental drill can cause stress levels to rise especially in those patients that are already susceptible to dental based anxiety and phobias. The dental community is constantly evolving new methods of technology to improve patient care and create a comfortable environment while increasing the efficiency of treatments. Here are a few tools dentists are using whenever possible instead of the traditional drill.
